Dental injuries can happen to anyone. Whether you crack your tooth on a bit of hard food, or your crown falls off, you can count on Dr. Ryan Rupert of Robinson Township Smiles to help you get out of pain and back on your feet.

A dental emergency is any oral health issue that you cannot treat yourself, and that is causing you significant pain. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Damage to a crown or bridge
  • A loose or damaged filling
  • Severe toothache
  • Knocked out teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Damage to the soft tissue of the gums and mouth

There are things you can do at home before your appointment with a Robinson Township dentist to reduce the pain of your dental injury.

Over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and inflammation.

Ice packs can also be applied to the exterior of the mouth in order to reduce swelling and provide topical pain relief.

Do not use aspirin, especially if bleeding is present. It’s a blood thinner and can prevent clotting.

Clean gauze or cotton balls with gentle pressure can help stop bleeding. Depending on the severity of your injury, bleeding should stop within a couple of hours. If you experience excessive bleeding that persists for several hours, you should visit an urgent care center or emergency room.

It can be hard to keep a clear head and know what to do when you’re experiencing a dental emergency. To help you take the right actions and save your damaged tooth, here are a few things to avoid if you experience a dental emergency:

Don’t wait to schedule your appointment – Immediate dental care is often critical when it comes to saving a lost or loose tooth, and to mitigate your pain and discomfort. As soon as you experience an oral injury or dental emergency, contact Dr. Rupert right away.

Avoid going to the emergency room (in most cases) – You should only go to the ER if you are experiencing heavy bleeding, your jaw is broken, or think you may have neck or head injuries. In most cases, ERs will refer patients to dental offices to restore your dental health. Unless you believe your life is in imminent danger, you should turn to an emergency dentist like Dr. Rupert of Robinson Township Smiles.

Don’t ignore your pain and hope it goes away – It’s tempting to just ignore toothaches or a minor oral injury and hope that it goes away. If you do this, you’re putting yourself at risk of developing a more serious condition. Never ignore your pain!

At Robinson Township Smiles, we define the term “dental emergency” very broadly, because we believe it’s better to be safe than sorry. A dental emergency is anything that:

Is causing you serious pain, discomfort, or bleeding

You cannot treat on your own

This includes oral injuries such as damaged, missing, or impacted teeth, as well as conditions like toothaches, and even serious periodontal disease. Additionally, damage to dental work like a bridge, filling, or crown is considered a serious emergency.

There are a few reasons that you should get emergency care from Robinson Township Smiles as soon as you can:

Save your tooth – Some conditions, like a missing (avulsed) tooth must be addressed quickly. To save a missing tooth, it must be re-implanted within 1-2 hours, so acting quickly in these situations will help you to save your tooth.

Eliminate pain – Oral injuries and issues like damaged dental work can be extremely painful, so fast treatment is the best way to eliminate your pain and discomfort.

Prevent further damage – A missing crown or filling can expose your tooth to oral bacteria, causing decay. A cracked tooth can cause a tooth infection. By getting immediate care, you can avoid these kinds of complications and ensure that no further damage occurs.
