Invisalign is a great way to correct the position and alignment of your teeth, while avoiding the discomfort and social stigma of traditional metal braces. And one of the biggest benefits of wearing Invisalign is that there are no food restrictions.
However, this doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. Invisalign has its own unique set of restrictions, which you should understand before you undergo treatment. Here are a few more details that the team at Robinson Township Smiles thinks you should know:
1. Shorten That Morning Coffee Session
You should not drink anything besides water when wearing Invisalign. Beverages like coffee, tea, wine and soda may stain your aligners. In addition, the sugars in these beverages will get stuck between your teeth, which can increase your risk of tooth decay.
You can still enjoy your morning cup, but you should drink it rather quickly, and it’s best to drink it while you’re eating the first meal of the day. You need to minimize the time you spend not wearing your aligners, as you need to keep them in for 22+ hours per day in order for your treatment to stay on-track.
2. Plan Snacks And Drinks Into Your Day
If you are a habitual snacker, you’ll have to plan ahead, and eat your snacks or drink your favorite beverages quickly, because you can’t eat or drink anything while wearing your aligners.
Make sure you plan out your snacks, drinks, and meals, to ensure you’re wearing your aligners for at least 20 hours per day, and preferably 22 hours or more.
3. Be Prepared To Brush More Frequently
It’s important to brush your teeth after every meal while wearing Invisalign. This is because sugar or food particles that remain in your mouth will be held to your teeth tightly by your aligners, which can lead to a higher risk of tooth decay.
Keep a travel toothbrush and mouthwash handy, so you can always keep your teeth clean after meals. You should also rinse your aligners before you put them back in, and clean them with warm water and a clean-rinsing soap at least once per day.
4. Avoid Chewing Gum Or Eating Mints While Wearing Invisalign
We’ve said it already, but it bears restating. You can’t eat or chew anything while wearing your aligners, even gum or breath mints. Chewing while wearing your aligners will warp and damage them, leading to delays in your treatment, and added expenses.
5. Keep Your Invisalign Storage Case Close At-Hand While Eating
When you receive your first set of aligners from Dr. Rupert, you’ll also be given a protective Invisalign case. You should always use this case to protect your aligners while you’re eating. If you don't, you risk damaging an aligner, misplacing it, or losing it. Again, this will result in a longer treatment time.
