Invisalign from Robinson Township Smiles requires some lifestyle adjustments, and one of these is that you should never drink anything, except plain water, while wearing your aligners. And yes, that includes your morning coffee. If you want to drink coffee, you need to take out your aligners. And after you finish your coffee, you should brush your teeth and rinse your aligners before you put them back into your mouth.
Why Shouldn’t You Drink Coffee While Wearing Invisalign?
There are a few different reasons that you shouldn’t drink coffee while wearing your Invisalign aligners. And note that while these reasons apply directly to coffee, they also are just as applicable to pretty much any other beverage that’s not water, including sugary seltzer, soda, tea, fruit juices, sports drinks and energy drinks, and so on.
- Staining of your teeth and aligner trays – Coffee has lots of dark compounds called “tannins” which are responsible for staining your teeth. Because your aligners will catch and hold a small amount of coffee when you drink, this makes the problem even worse, and increases the likelihood of coffee stains on your teeth.Your aligners themselves can also be stained over time, making them discolored and obvious when worn. This is not ideal for Invisalign trays, which are meant to be an invisible and subtle method of orthodontic correction.
- Higher risk of cavities – Coffee is naturally acidic, even without any additives or sweeteners, and this can lead to a higher risk of cavities, even if you take it black. And if you add sugar and milk into the equation, the bacteria in your mouth will have a field day. Sugar will be trapped between your aligners and teeth, where bacteria will feed, excrete acid, and cause tooth decay.
- Bad breath – Coffee dries out your mouth a bit, and can promote the growth of bacteria in your mouth and in your aligners, which leads to some seriously stinky “coffee breath.”
- Aligners could warp when drinking hot beverages – If you drink very hot coffee, your aligners could become warped. Invisalign is made of “thermoplastic,” meaning the plastic is heated up to change its shape when your aligners are built. Prolonged exposure to hot liquids could warp and damage them.
You Can Still Drink Your Morning Coffee – Just Plan Ahead And Do It Properly!
If you love coffee, what you read in the previous section may have you in a panic. Will you have to stop drinking it completely? Of course not!
You can still have your morning coffee and enjoy it. Just take your Invisalign trays before you drink your morning cup, and try to drink it within 15-30 minutes so that you don’t spend too much time without wearing your aligners.
Then, brush your teeth and rinse off your aligners, pop them back in, and you’re good to go! It’s just that easy. Yes, it will take some adjustment, but compared to the bad things that can happen if you drink coffee while wearing Invisalign, it’s worth it to change your habits.
